The Universal Worship

“God cannot be two. The God of each is the God of all, but in order to comprehend that God we each have to make our own God.”

—Hazrat Inayat Khan

The Universal Worship celebrates the essential unity of all faith traditions through meditation and prayer. The service was instituted in the early 20th century by Hazrat Inayat Khan as a way to join in worship with all the prophets of humanity. A cherag (or minister, from the Persian word for “lamp”) facilitates the service, which often includes scriptural readings and spiritual practices and music from various traditions.

The Universal Worship is an approach to the One through the portal of the different faith traditions. Our aim is to embody the consciousness of unity which is the central theme of all religions., and we invoke the messengers of truth, known and unknown, who have appeared in all times and in all places. We affirm the reality of one being, the perfection of love in whom all are united. All teachers of humanity who have guided us towards this ideal have been an embodiment of the divine spirit of guidance.

The Universal Worship gives an opportunity to those belonging to different religions or no religion to worship together. Services and classes are held regularly and all are welcome. Cherags (ministers) are available for weddings, funerals, house blessings, baby blessings and other rites of passage. We are happy to conduct a service or give a presentation at your place of worship, school or community gathering.

The Universal Worship service is currently being offered on the first and third Sundays of the month at 11:00 AM at the Universel in Bothell, and on the second Sunday of the month at 10:00 AM at the Interfaith Community Sanctuary in Ballard.  For more details, see the calendar.

For anyone interested in becoming a cherag, or minister in the Universal Worship, a ten-month training will be offered in Seattle on the 3rd Saturday of each month from October 2012 to June 2013, beginning October 20. Click here for details.

 Weddings

We offer a wedding ritual that recognizes and celebrates the spiritual basis of marriage, but is not tied to any one religion. A cherag (minister) will work with you to create a unique and meaningful ceremony. Commitment ceremonies are also available where legal marriage is not an option.

 Funerals/Memorial Services

The funeral service of the Universal Worship is clear, simple and comforting. The service aims to bid farewell to the soul who has passed and send it on its journey without attachment.

 House Blessings/Purifications

This is a way to consciously invite the presence of the divine into your home. A house blessing is a wonderful way to start a residence in a new place or to revitalize and clear historical impressions from the place you are. This ritual can be done as part of a housewarming event or in a more private way.

 Baby Blessings/Baptism with Light

The reception of an infant into the “Church of All” opens a stream of blessing to guide and protect her or him throughout life. This ritual also helps to establish the spiritual guardianship of the community.
